Lesson objectives:

Pupils should learn:

  • To describe patterns and relationships.
  • To work through a problem in a logical way.

Learning Outcomes

Pupils will be able to

  • Present the results in an organised way.
  • Children will be able to explain what they did and describe the patterns they see.

Resources:

  • Copies of the Butterfly problem
  • 3 enlarged Butterflies
  • Colouring pencils red, green, yellow and black

Introduction

  • Show the children 3 enlarged outlines of a Butterfly with the titles green body, red body and yellow body at the top.
  • Explain to the children that you have 3 colours. Red, yellow and green only.
  • Emphasise the fact you already know what colour the body is going to be because it says at the top.
  • On each butterfly use one colour for all of the spots and another colour for all four wings
  • Each colour can only be used once on a butterfly
  • Ask the children to give you some ideas and colour the part they suggest.
  • Tell the children that you have a challenge for them and that there are a lot of other ways that the Butterfly can be coloured – can they find them?

Plenary

  • How many different ways did the children find?
  • Look at some of the completed sheets, did the children see any patterns when they were doing the activity?
  • Did anyone have a special way that made the colouring easier?
